Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It caused by previous exposure to asbestos. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The two major types of malignant mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, which concerns the mesothelium membrane that surrounds the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma which concerns the mesothelium layer that covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. The people most at risk from being carriers of this cancer are those have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Because of this, the disease is most common in men between the ages of sixty and seventy as this is the group that commonly worked with asbestos during those years. Because of the lack of protection and regulations in those days, these workers were constantly exposed to the dust and fibres from the asbestos, which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal. Many building materials used in both public and domestic premises prior to the banning of asbestos may contain asbestos. Those performing renovation works or diy activities may expose themselves to asbestos dust.

Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. Mesothelioma is an extremely malignant and incurable cancer that infects the membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Affecting the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium – the outer lining that protects the body’s major organs such as the heart, stomach and lungs. Pleural mesothelioma represents 75% of mesothelioma cases - but it is far from the only type of this deadly cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines, and is just as dangerous and deadly. Treatment of MM using conventional therapies has not proved successful and patients have a median survival time of 6 - 12 months after presentation. The clinical behaviour of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Health-care workers who specialize in part control are employing state-of-the art techniques to successfully fight pain.

2. During the initial stages of mesothelioma, pain can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

3. Drug therapy is the primary method for treating mesothelioma pain.

4. Non-Opoids are pain-relieving medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofin, which can be purchases over-the-counter and taken orally.

5. Opoids are the strongest medicines available to treat pain. Opoids, such as codeine, morphine, oxcodone, fentany, and hydromorphone, are very effective in relieving mesothelioma pain.

6. Adjuvant analgesics are medicines intended for purposes other than pain relief. A number of these are used to alleviate pain associated with mesothelioma, such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

7. Emotional Support to Help Relieve Pain.As with all aspects of mesothelioma, emotional support from family or professional counseling can play a key role in pain management

8. For patients with localized disease, and who can tolerate a radical surgery, radiation is often given post-operatively as a consolidative treatment.

9. Chrysotile has been used more frequently, hence many mesotheliomas are caused by chrysotile.

10. Removal is taking place in schools and other public buildings throughout the U.S. The hope is that these measures will greatly reduce the occurrence of this cancer.

Radioactive iodine treatment for Thyroid Cancer: Ideas to keep occupied during isolation?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
6js59 asked:

My friend is having radioactive iodine treatment for her thyroid cancer in a few weeks and she will be in isolation for 4 days straight at the hospital. We are trying to get together some things for her to do while she’s in there (she’ll have a tv and magazines) but whatever she brings in with her she won’t be able to take back out. Does anyone have any ideas of things she could do to keep herself occupied while she’s in there? Is any idea’s of some cheap things she could bring in with her and leave there?
She’s having a really aggressive treatment and they want to monitor her, so yes it does make absolute sense that she would be staying there for 4 days. Don’t respond unless you are actually answering my question.

Facing Mesothelioma Without a California Mesothelioma Attorney

Friday, September 5th, 2008
Nick Johnson asked:

The diagnosis of Mesothelioma will leave a victim in California in a state of perpetual challenges. Mesothelioma is a gravely difficult disease to contend with, and there are numerous issues which will unfortunately arise along the way.

The absolute best chance a California mesothelioma victim has at minimizing stress and discouragement is finding the best Mesothelioma team available. This includes Mesothelioma doctors and a top notch California mesothelioma lawyer.

Finding the best mesothelioma attorney in California can be a challenge, and the more information you are armed with, the better the chances you have of finding the Mesothelioma lawyer that is right for you. One of your top priorities is knowledge.

Knowing everything there is to know about Mesothelioma, the current California mesothelioma laws which will apply to you and your Mesothelioma case, and knowing what other people in your area have determined about their Mesothelioma representation can paint the picture of what your Mesothelioma attorney should be able to do for you.

While California mesothelioma attorneys should definitely be more knowledgeable than you when it comes to Mesothelioma law, having enough information to know whether or not the Mesothelioma lawyer you are interviewing has a solid knowledge base can help you determine the attorney’s credentials.

Searching for a good Mesothelioma lawyer is exactly that, a search. Searching entails things like the use of the internet, meeting with several California mesothelioma lawyers, and determining which Mesothelioma lawyer has the best chance of representing you within the confines of the law and aggressively as possible while holding your best interests as their top priority.

So often, whether it is doctors, lawyers, or counselors we pull a name from the phone book, make an appointment, and just assume that we have found a quality professional to handle our needs. Finding a highly qualified specialist takes more effort than that. Keep in mind that there are two types of Mesothelioma attorneys. California mesothelioma lawsuits tend to be awarded or settled quite high.

Jury awards for California mesothelioma lawsuits have historically been very high. Some Mesothelioma lawyers are interested in finding justice for their clients, and they are naturally compassionate and caring about the process and sensitive to becoming the best Mesothelioma lawyer they can possibly become. The second type of Mesothelioma lawyer is interested mostly in their share of those very high Mesothelioma settlements and awards.

This type of Mesothelioma lawyer will be lacking compassion and sensitivity to a Mesothelioma victim’s journey and their needs. It is usually noticeable right away whether or not you are greeted professionally but compassionately to discuss your Mesothelioma case or if you are greeted with callousness and a lack of basic integrity. Good Mesothelioma lawyers understand the disease, the complications, and most often the difficulties you are going to face even more than you do. A disassociated Mesothelioma attorney has simply plastered the words “Mesothelioma attorney” under his or her name in the phone book.

Word of mouth is an excellent form of Mesothelioma attorney research. For the most part, Mesothelioma victims can offer each other advice about finding a capable California mesothelioma attorney. Bear in mind that every case is different and each personality is unique, and there are instances where a referral from a fellow Mesothelioma victim just doesn’t suit you. That’s okay. Most of the time, however, Mesothelioma victims can be truly beneficial in helping each other find these very highly recommended Mesothelioma lawyers.

It is perfectly appropriate to insist the Mesothelioma attorney provides an accurate case history that can allow you to evaluate their basic performance record. Researching their self proclaimed results can be a little time consuming, but when it is a question of integrity and honesty, the research is very important. Mesothelioma lawyers are basically honest, but you don’t want to risk ending up with the laughing stock of the profession.

Researching your selections for a Mesothelioma lawyer may take some time, and Mesothelioma victims and their families do not have ample time, but the time it takes to research the quality of a Mesothelioma lawyer is invaluable considering the time and financial resources which can be lost when the research is not completed.

Facing Mesothelioma with a California mesothelioma attorney you can not trust will simply make the challenges which lay ahead in dealing with Mesothelioma more difficult. You may need your Mesothelioma to speak on your behalf in the event that you are not capable of doing so, and not having an established and trusted relationship with a Mesothelioma attorney to begin with may make that an impossible situation.

This is not the time to pull a random name from a phone book. Treating the search for a California mesothelioma attorney much like the search for the perfect employee is the only way to feel confident enough to allow you to focus on other issues regarding your health rather than babysitting your attorney.

Mesothelioma is A Deadly Cancer

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
Nick Johnson asked:

Many residents in Texas are at risk for a type of cancer they have never heard about, and no knowing about the cancer could mean a mis-diagnosis of the cancer or that victims of this horrible disease may ignore some key symptoms that could help with treatment.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which attacks the pleura, the lining of the lungs, around the lining of the heart and the lining of the abdominal cavity. While Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, over 3,000 cases are reported each year and many people pass away within a year or two of diagnosis.

The vast majority of Mesothelioma cases can be traced back to asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure happens primarily through jobs that were held working with asbestos as well as military service. Up until 20 years ago, when it was discovered that asbestos exposure caused Mesothelioma and other health problems, many materials and products that were used in construction and manufacturing contained asbestos.

Asbestos was used a lot during World War II when naval shipyards were producing massive amounts of ships for the war effort - at the same time, many products for constructing all types of buildings were using asbestos, as well as manufacturing and automotives. Until quite recently, products and processes that use asbestos were unregulated, however, the risks of asbestos use were well known and still companies continued to use the product freely.

Some companies provided very little protection or education about the risks of working with asbestos to their workers, which now leaves them on the hook for compensation for workers who have now contracted Mesothelioma or other asbestos exposure related illnesses. The list of workers that used asbestos in their jobs every day include ship yard workers, auto mechanics, boiler makers, brick layers, building inspectors, drywall installers, carpenters, roofers, electricians, iron workers painters, plasterers, plumbers, roofers and long shore men. Millions of people were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, and today, many of them are contracting Mesothelioma.

The workers are not the only people who contract this deadly cancer - the families, spouses and children of workers who were exposed to asbestos are also at risk for contracting Mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fine fiber that is easily attached to hair, skin, clothing and shoes and brought home. The fibers are nearly indestructible and when inhaled become lodged in the lining of the lungs, one day to become inflamed and causing Mesothelioma cancer.

If you, or one of your family members, has contracted Mesothelioma, it is time to contact a Mesothelioma lawyer to find out if you have a case for a Mesothelioma lawsuit. The biggest difficulty with asbestos exposure and the onset of Mesothelioma symptoms is the lengthy time between exposure and diagnosis. Mesothelioma usually doesn’t even begin to present symptoms for 20 years after the asbestos exposure, making it difficult to diagnose and track the cause or companies that may have caused the exposure.

Mesothelioma symptoms include chest pain, fluid in the chest, coughing, breathing difficulty, which means that many of these symptoms can easily be mistaken for other diseases or conditions. It is unfortunate but for most people, by the time they are diagnosed with Mesothelioma, it is much too late - traditional treatments for cancer such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are of little effect on the disease.

The fact of the matter is that most of the victims of Mesothelioma can blame someone, a company, a supervisor or a boss that knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure but failed to warn the workers or provide any safety precautions for the material. Mesothelioma is devastating physically, emotionally and financially. A Texas Mesothelioma attorney can help you with your case or the case of a loved one who has contracted Mesothelioma.

Only a Mesothelioma lawyer is capable of tracking down the causes of your exposure and is able to help you with a Mesothelioma lawsuit for financial compensation for you and your family. A Texas Mesothelioma attorney can link your exposure to your illness and fight for your rights for compensation for the contracting of the disease. While the money won’t replace a life, yours or a loved one, the financial compensation that you may be entitled to will help cover the medical costs, lost wages, funeral expenses and the pain and suffering of the victim throughout the disease.

Consult a California Mesothelioma Lawyer About Mesothelioma Lawsuits Due To Asbestos Exposure

Monday, September 1st, 2008
Nick Johnson asked:

Despite the fact that the dangers of asbestos exposure have been known since the 1920s, this fire resistant, lung incinerating material is still used in production and construction today. Granted, the government came forward in 1980 and placed a few new rules and regulations in place to help minimize the effects of too much asbestos exposure, but Mesothelioma victims will tell you that it was simply a case of a little too little and a little too late.

Public awareness of Mesothelioma has risen ten fold over the past ten to fifteen years, making it even more detrimental that companies today are still utilizing this material. There is very little payoff which would entice anyone with the necessary education into working in conditions that are likely to cause Mesothelioma.

The only likely answer? Even those companies which are in coherence with United States government regulations are not voluntarily admitting to their employees that they are working in asbestos contaminated areas. Most people who are diagnosed with Mesothelioma are genuinely surprised, unless of course their company or former company has been sued a few times by former or current employees in a Mesothelioma lawsuit.

I recently read a review of a company which had been sued four times for Mesothelioma claims and asbestos exposure and the majority of the company’s retired employees discovered the health risks were present for the initial stage of the hearings. He was excused when he admitted being a former employee, and once released from his responsibilities as a juror, he informed as many retirees as he could find. Seven of the retired employees were subsequently tested and diagnosed with Mesothelioma.

Obviously, situations as such are very rare. Yet the point remains that people do not have the information they need regarding asbestos exposure and the threat that Mesothelioma presents in their life. Withholding such information leaves people at a serious disadvantage when it comes to making educated decisions about their health as it pertains to the work environment. It is fair to say that people do not typically willingly expose themselves to high levels of asbestos knowing the threat of Mesothelioma is very real and very ugly.

Mesothelioma settlements reflect the company’s acknowledgement as to their culpability in these cases. While there is the perpetual excuse that companies tend to settle a Mesothelioma lawsuit to avoid negative press, there is much more truth to the notion that a company is much more willing to shell out to a Mesothelioma victim they are readily convinced contracted the disease while working for their company than they are to give hand outs to people they believe did not get sick working for them. A fight is only worth fighting when you believe you can win.

Not every case of Mesothelioma is one that will end up in settlement or a Mesothelioma lawsuit. A competent California mesothelioma lawyer will honestly tell you that not every case of Mesothelioma is able to make it to court or settlement. There are some determining factors that play into whether or not a Mesothelioma case will make it past the first meeting with a California mesothelioma lawyer.

Only a qualified California mesothelioma lawyer can tell you whether or not the specifics of your case qualify, but a few factors that determine a solid Mesothelioma case include the use of the asbestos, the quality of the lawyer, the laws during the time of both construction and employment, current legislation, and the time period which the building was constructed.

Fighting a Mesothelioma lawsuit is time consuming. So is treating the symptoms of Mesothelioma. Some people that start a Mesothelioma lawsuit are unable to finish their lawsuit due to health reasons. This does lay the groundwork for families to continue the Mesothelioma lawsuit in the event that the unfortunate but often inevitable conclusion to Mesothelioma.

Families often file a wrongful death Mesothelioma lawsuit after the victim has passed away. Most California mesothelioma lawyers will advise at least allowing them to gather direct information from the client even if the client has no intention of filing a Mesothelioma lawsuit. This allows the Mesothelioma attorney a chance to gather pertinent information that the family members of the victim may not be able to adequately answer.

No Mesothelioma victim should ever feel pressured to file a Mesothelioma lawsuit. Regardless of everything else, the decision to file a Mesothelioma lawsuit can only come from the victim.
