Can a person donate their hair to help defray the cost of a wig for a cancer patient?

My friend has ****** cancer she is starting chemo therapy. She may want a wig. I have very long hair would cut it donate it in her name to help defray the cost of a nice wig. Is this possible? My daughter donated her hair to an organization for kids when her cousin had cancer.
